今日のブログでは、時間に関する英語の表現を紹介します。よく知られているものもあれば、そうでないものもあると思います。
Better late than never
意味：『遅れることは「やらない・来ない」よりマシだ』と言う表現。
例：I submitted my paper a day late, but it was better late than never because the teacher only marked it down one grade.
Only time will tell
意味： 時間が経てば何かがわかるようになると言うこと。
例： Only time will tell whether we made the right decision about our home purchase.
On the spur of the moment
意味：衝動的に何かをすること。
例：Study has shown that men tend to purchase more on the spur of the moment than women.
Once in a blue moon
この表現はめったにない、頻繁にないことを意味します。
例：I watch baseball on TV once in a blue moon.
Living on borrowed time
意味： 思いがけず生きのびている状態；（重い病気で）いつ死ぬかわからない状態。奇跡的に生き延びている状態。
例： After her heart attack, my grandmother often expressed that she was living on borrowed time.
Against the clock
意味：時間が迫っていると言う表現。特定の時間までに何かを終わらせようと大急ぎで行わなければいけない状態。
例 ：Scientists are working against the clock to come up with a new vaccine that save lives.
Beat the clock
意味：（目標に向かって）時間切れになる前に何かをやり遂げること。
例：In a desperate attempt to beat the clock, I pounded on the keyboard without a break to finish my final essay before the deadline.
『Against the clock』 と 『Beat the clock』の違い。
『Against the clock』 は 『beat the clock』より緊張感のある表現です。『Beat the clock』は目標に制限時間があると言う表現ですが、『Against the clock』は時間が迫っていると表現になるため、緊急時などに使います。例えば、誰かの命を救うために薬を時間内に届けなければならないと言う場合は『Against the clock』を使います。
Kill time
意味：(短時間・期間の）暇を潰すこと。
例：After arriving too early for a haircut appointment, I managed to kill time by perusing their fashion magazines.
Too much time on my hands
意味：時間を持て余していること。
例：Carol needs a new hobby; she has too much time on my hands since her retirement.
Turn back the hands of time
意味：過去を語ること、再現すること、過去に戻ること。
例： If I could turn back the hands of time, I would be sure to brush my teeth after every meal.
The time is ripe
意味：時機が熟したということ。何かが起こるのに良い時期であるということ。
例：I’m waiting until the time is ripe to tell my parents about my physics exam.
Have the time of your life
意味：素晴らしい時間を過ごすという意味。
例：They had the time of their life at the Beatles concert.
Time is Money
時間は貴重だと言うこと。
例：Remember this: Time is money, and money is time.
Time is on my side
意味：時間に余裕があること。
例：We don’t have to decide until the end of the year, so time is on our side.
